Introduction Layers
I chose the theme 'Layers' as I enjoy doing collages because I like to make something physical, I like to work with collages as I like the unexpected result of layering different images. I just like to mess around with them and see what I get. Collages give me a lot ideas and opportunities to experiment because you can you can make any collage you want you can make all kind of different ones. The images above represent a selection of artists work that I like, I like the artists above as although they are all different from each other they are similar as they are all forms of collages. I'd like to experiment taking inspiration from all of them.
Romare Beardon
When I saw these collages I like them as although each image is different they are all made in a similar way using the same process, so their is a certain style to them. All of the collages look as though they have black and white photographs in them with elements of a city in the background. All of the images have faces in them and all of the faces are black people. Bearden used personal memories, African-American cultural history, and literature as the source of his subject matter.
Young Student, 1964
out of Romare Beardon works I found 'Young Students 1964' the most interesting because its got more detail then his other work.
My first impressions is that the image is quite unique, due to the composition being made of a variety of images from different sources.
Because of the title of the images it's made clear that the subjects are young students.
I think Romare Beardon showing a African cultural and maybe he trying to show his old life when he was younger.

First responses
for my first response I got a few magazines and I chose images from the magazine and then I cut them up to make lots of collages with them I changed them around. I liked the idea of being able to change the images as I was going along without sticking the images down. They were constantly changing collages.
In today lesson I got some negative photos and I cut out some stuff from a magazine like faces, clothes, jewellery and shoes. I stuck the cut out bits to the negative photos. I used these photos to respond to Romare Beardon because he uses faces and the back group looks old and I think the negative photos go really well with Romare Beardon art work. How I would improve is next time I would put the cut outs more closer and I will add more stuff to the pictures .
Hannah Hughes
out of Hannah Hughes work this one catch my eye the most because I like the shapes, patterns, and the dark colours. what stands out the most about this picture is the way Hannah Hughes does her art work she makes sure they are all close together and I think that what makes the picture look better because the colours go really together and she layed them out really nicely.

Second response
in today lesson I made some collages. I found some nice backgrounds and I cut out some faces and some clothes and I stuck them all down. Next time I can improve this by making them closer to each other and not all spaced out and I can add some shapes and more detail to the photos and change the backgrounds up a bit.
- My plan is to continue making collages using images from fashion magazines,. I like the fact that I can layer images on top of each other so that I can make a new image.
- I want to create some collages with images that are more closer together so I need to spend more time creating collages
- I'd like to create collages that have something from each of the artists that I have looked at.
- I plan to use shapes as well as people.
- I intend to create 4 collages which I then want to print in just 2 colours using the photocopier to enlarge and copy the images.
- I'm not sure yet if I'd like to create a booklet or have images in an exhibition of images or perhaps both.
